What are the signs that my breast reduction has gone wrong?

Patients can experience a variety of symptoms that might indicate negligence. Some of the more common problems associated with breast reduction surgery are listed below:

  • Breasts remaining ptotic or droopy after surgery
  • Inappropriate scarring
  • Asymmetrical breasts
  • Asymmetrical nipples, where one nipple appears higher than the other
  • Loss of nipple

Although relatively rare, there are also risks associated with going under general anaesthetic. Typically these problems only occur roughly once in every 10,000 procedures. Risks and complications associated with general anaesthetic include:

  • Anaphylaxis (a serious allergic reaction to the anaesthetic that can result in death in extremely rare cases)
  • Inherited reaction to the anaesthetic
  • These problems are more likely to arise if you have other illnesses, smoke or are overweight

Your surgeon should discuss these risks with you before your procedure.

There could also be emotional issues following negligent surgery, such as:

  • A feeling of disappointment that the surgery failed to “achieve the effect” the patient desired, if an insufficient amount of fatty tissue was removed for example
  • Depression or mental health issues as a result of negligent surgery

Is there a time limit on breast reduction claims?

Breast reduction claims should be made within three years from the day of the injury, as is the case with all personal injury claims. However, if you were unaware of the injury and the complications don’t present themselves until later on, the three year time frame will begin from the point you became aware and received your diagnosis.

What can I claim for after a breast reduction?

When making a breast reduction claim, there are a number of things you can claim; including general damages for your suffering, medical fees, travel costs, loss of earnings, and the cost of care if someone has had to provide from you.
