Thinking of Cosmetic Surgery - Do your homework

Private cosmetic surgery in England and Wales is a boom industry which TJL Solicitors believes is inadequately regulated.

Millions of pounds are being spent on plastic surgery but unfortunately some less scrupulous providers are putting the health of some patients at risk by putting profits and commerce before ethics and good practice.

Cosmetic surgery is sometimes trivialised or commoditised and patients are encouraged to go under the knife with offers of loyalty cards and money-off vouchers. This fosters the idea that cosmetic surgery is routine or as simple as visiting a beauty parlour. But it is not. Many procedures, such as tummy-tucks and liposuction, are major, invasive operations.

Initial consultations for operations are also sometimes performed by non-medically qualified sales representatives. Patients can be encouraged to commit to surgery quickly and deposits may be asked for before a patient has even seen their surgeon.

Doctors can also perform private cosmetic surgery without having completed the relevant higher surgical training. These doctors would not be entitled to perform cosmetic surgery in the NHS.

TJL Solicitors would advise anyone thinking of undergoing cosmetic surgery to do their research on the doctor carrying out the procedure. If in doubt always use a doctor who is entitled to practise cosmetic surgery in the NHS.
