Gastric Band Surgery

Gastric bands are most commonly administered using keyhole surgery, during which a band is secured around the upper section of your stomach, creating smaller stomach space.  It is performed under general anaesthesia which means you will be unconscious for the operation and will be required to stay in hospital over night.

What is Gastric Banding?

Gastric banding is a cosmetic surgical procedure to address a patient’s excessive body weight in which a silicone band is placed around the top portion of the stomach. The band generates a small pouch with limited volume which will provide an early and prolonged feeling that the patient is full. Additionally, the band slows the passage of food from the pouch to the lower part of the stomach, thus leading to decreased food intake and subsequent weight loss.

When gastric banding works well, the patient can see significant improvements to their appearance but when gastric band surgery goes wrong, the after-effects can be terrible. If an incompetent cosmetic surgeon or clinic is the cause of your bad gastric banding, then a legal firm of cosmetic surgery solicitors can help you claim financial compensation. This financial award, which can include reconstructive surgery, can help you regain some peace of mind.

Worldwide Obesity Problems

In the last few decades, obesity has become a worldwide health problem. According to the World Health Organization, obesity worldwide has nearly doubled since 1980 while the number of people with obesity in the UK has more than trebled in the last 25 years. A UK Government report recently claimed that obesity will cost the NHS £6.4 billion per year by 2015. That vast increase in obesity has lead to a rise in the number of gastric band surgeries carried out in the UK. Unfortunately at the same time, the figures for gastric band negligence claims have also increased.

The Gastric Banding Operation

A gastric band surgery is most commonly done using a tiny camera (laparoscope) that is placed in the patient’s stomach. This laparoscopic gastric banding is minimally invasive, is performed using a general anaesthetic and usually takes less than an hour.

The cosmetic surgeon makes several small surgical cuts in the patient’s abdomen. A camera and the instruments needed to perform the surgery are passed through these incisions. The surgeon then places a band around the upper part of the stomach to separate it from the lower part. The band contains a balloon which is inflated through a port and placed just beneath your skin. This creates a small pouch that has a narrow opening into the larger, lower part of the stomach. If the gastric banding has gone well, when the patient eats after having gastric band surgery, the small pouch will fill up quickly and the patient will feel full after eating just a small amount of food. After surgery, the cosmetic surgeon doctor may adjust the band to make food pass more slowly or quickly through the patient’s stomach.

If however the gastric banding has gone wrong, the consequences may be dreadful. We are experienced in progressing gastric band surgery negligence claims and know exactly what symptoms to look for when gastric banding goes wrong.
