About gastric band surgery

Laparoscopic gastric banding is a cosmetic surgical procedure intended to help a patient lose weight. A surgeon will place a silicone band around the top portion of the stomach, which creates a small pouch with limited volume, to provide an early and prolonged feeling that the patient is full.

The band slows the passage of food from the pouch to the lower part of the stomach, leading to decreased food intake and subsequent weight loss.

The procedure

This type of surgery is commonly carried out using a tiny camera, known as a laparoscope, which is placed in the patient’s stomach. It is minimally invasive, and is performed using a general anaesthetic, taking less than an hour in total.

During the operation, the surgeon will make several small cuts in the patient’s abdomen, before passing through a camera and the instruments required to perform this procedure. A band is then placed around the upper part of the stomach, separating it from its lower part. This band creates a small pouch that has a narrow opening into the lower part of the stomach.

If the procedure is a success, the small pouch will fill up quickly when the patient eats just a small amount of food, leading to considerable weight loss.

What could go wrong?

When a gastric band works well, a patient will experience significant weight loss, however, if this goes wrong the after effects can be terrible. Risks and complications that could indicate negligence by a surgeon or clinic include:

  • Band slippage
  • Band leaking
  • Inflammation of the stomach
  • Inappropriate placement of main port incision
