About dental fillings

A dental filling, otherwise known as dental restoration, is usually a simple procedure involving the removal of decaying or damaged parts of a tooth using a drill. The tooth is then repaired with a substance designed to protect the rest of the tooth, therefore preventing any further decay.

Different types of fillings are utilised by dental professionals, depending on the nature of the fracture, decay or damage. Materials used range from amalgams of metallic material to gold, depending on the patient’s decision. Patients should be given the option to try more natural materials such as white fillings, however, there is usually a higher cost associated with these options.

The procedure

In this procedure, a local anaesthetic is applied to numb the area surrounding the tooth before the dentist uses a drill to remove the decayed material. In some cases, an air abrasion instrument, or laser, is used instead.

The cavity is then cleaned to allow room for the dental filling. If the tooth decay has spread close to the root, a liner made from glass ionomer, composite resin or other materials may be inserted first to protect the nerve. The dental filling material itself is applied to the area in layers and is shaped to the desired outcome. Finally, any excess material is trimmed, and the dental filling is polished.

What could go wrong?

This type of procedure is incredibly common, and the majority are carried out without complication. However, sometimes mistakes can happen, and the patient may be left to pay for the mistakes made by their dentist.

The team at Cosmetic Surgery Solicitors has dealt with an increasing number of dental negligence cases over the years. Some of the most common indications that a dental filling procedure has gone wrong include:

  • Fillings placed in the wrong teeth by your dentist
  • Persistent, extreme sensitive teeth after the anaesthetic has worn off
  • Failure to clean the cavity adequately resulting in infection
  • Allergic reaction to a metal amalgam (silver) filling
  • Extreme discomfort following the procedure
