Surgery Process Guide to Superficial Musculo Aponeutronic System (SMAS)
“Psychosocial issues often are involved when patients seek facial rejuvenation. Understanding the patient’s motivation for surgery is a key factor in successful surgery.” – eMedicine.com
The procedure of a superficial musculo aponeutronic system involves an incision being made along the hairline and down past both ears, before continuing up the hairline behind the ears.
You will be given a general anaesthetic before the procedure begins.
Once the anaesthetic has set in, your surgeon will make an incision along the hairline, down and past the front of the ears and up into the hairline behind the ears.
Your skin is then detached from the underlying tissues.
Surplus fat is then either removed or repositioned, and the skin is trimmed of any excess.
The face is then stitched back into is new position. Permanent stitches can be left under the skin so that deep tissues are fixed in position.
Hair loss or a change in hairline at the front or behind the ears.
Permanent nerve damage.
General anaesthetic carries several serious risks, however, these are very rare (typically, these risks will occur one case in every 10,000).
These complications can include:
-Anaphylaxis (a harmful reaction to the anaesthetic)
Inherited reaction to the anaesthetic
In extremely rare cases, death (approx. 1 death for every 100,000 general anaesthetics given).
These problems are more likely to arise if:
you are undergoing emergency surgery
you have other illnesses
you are a smoker
you are overweight
Your surgeon should talk you through these risks before your operation.
Before going ahead with any cosmetic procedure it’s really important that you consider both the psychological and financial associations. You can familiarise yourself with these key considerations here, by reading the S.A.F.E Choice Guide.
