About dental implants
Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth, bridges or dentures, and can be inserted for single tooth replacement or complete mouth restorations and reconstructions.
The procedure involves the removal of the tooth’s root and the implantation of small titanium or aluminium dental implant screws into the jawbone to create a permanent new root.
A natural, tooth-coloured crown is then placed over the dental implant and attached to it. The procedure can involve the use of single or multiple screws, depending on the type and number of implants required by the patient.
What can go wrong?
After a successful procedure, patients will typically experience improved confidence and benefit from being able to eat more easily.
However, some patients are incorrectly advised to receive dental implants despite not being a good candidate for them, because, for example, they have pre-existing gum disease or similar condition. That could lead to the implants ultimately failing and the victim experiencing pain and sometimes even depression as a result.
Other common indications that the surgery has gone wrong are:
- If the screws are overly tightened, they may break, which can leave the jaw permanently damaged, the implant unsalvageable and the tooth missing.
- Peri-implantitis, where the gum tissue surrounding the operated area decays, causing severe pain, and leaving the patient disfigured as the implant becomes openly visible. This can lead to the loss of the implant.
- The implants may fail to integrate with the patient’s bone, leading to bleeding, damage to the bone and potential failure of the implant.
