Root Canal Treatment Claims

If you think you have suffered as a result of negligence by a dentist before, during or after root canal treatment, you could be entitled to make a claim for compensation.

When you put your teeth in the hands of a dentist, you have the right to expect diligence and the highest standards of care, especially if your procedure is performed in a private clinic and costs thousands of pounds.

However, more and more dental patients find they are disappointed with the results of their treatments and are left to count the physical and financial cost when root canals go wrong. That’s where Cosmetic Surgery Solicitors come in. We are leaders in the field of cosmetic surgery and dental negligence and are here to help you claim the compensation you deserve.

About root canal treatment

When a tooth is badly infected, the only treatment options are root canal treatment or dental extraction. A tooth becomes infected when bacteria enters the tooth’s nerve. This can occur due to dental decay, existing deep or leaking fillings, trauma or gum disease.

Carried out under local anaesthetic, root canal dental treatment begins with the dentist drilling a hole in the centre of the tooth to provide access to the root canal system. Once all the root canals have been cleaned and shaped, they are permanently filled to prevent bacteria from re-entering the canal system.

A final X-ray may then be taken to check the canals have been filled completely and to the correct length. Root-filled teeth are more brittle than healthy teeth and a crown may be required to improve the dental strength.

Single-rooted teeth root canal treatment can often be finished in an hour, but multi-rooted teeth and more complex root canals may take several visits to the dentist to complete.

After root canal treatment the patient may experience a little discomfort for a few days. But if your pain has continued for longer than that, then your root canal may have gone wrong.

Common examples of root canal negligence

Most root canal treatment works well for dental patients but complications can occur during or after root canal treatment. Common complications include:

  • Root fracture
  • Instrument fracture inside the root canal
  • Perforation of the tooth by the instrument
  • Failure to clean, shape or fill the canals appropriately
  • Poor quality fillings/crowns
