About dermal filler surgery

Dermal fillers are used to reverse the appearance of wrinkles and to fill out facial lines such as nose-to-mouth grooves and forehead lines.

This is technically considered a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure and involves injecting material into the skin, to smooth contours and fill wrinkles in the face.

The procedure has become as popular as breast enhancements and can be divided into two main groups:

  • Temporary fillers made from hyaluronic acid, which is eventually absorbed into the body
  • Longer-lasting fillers made from other materials that can remain in the body for many years

The procedure is quick, often taking 30 minutes or less to complete and with very little recovery time required; you can resume your normal activities immediately after treatment.

The steps in the procedure are as follows:

  • The area of your face receiving the treatment is cleansed, and a numbing cream is applied to make sure the injections cause minimal discomfort
  • Your surgeon will then inject small quantities of dermal filler into the skin with an ultrafine needle

Examples of negligence

Cosmetic surgeons are increasingly called upon to deal with problems arising from injectable fillers, even though many do not administer them in the first place.

These problems are often caused by a clinician failing to inject the filler deep enough, or unproven substances being used by unqualified practitioners.

Bruising, swelling, redness and soreness are all common side-effects, but if they have not died down after two weeks, it could indicate a severe complication.

Negligent dermal filler treatment can result in a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Localised swellings
  • Blocked blood vessels
  • Scarring
  • Allergic reaction
  • Nerve damage
  • Blurred vision
  • Blindness
  • Necrosis
