About Laser Vein Removal

Varicose veins only affect women, and they develop when blood doesn’t flow properly through the veins in the legs. They are typically dark blue or purple in colour and appear as people age, or during pregnancy, and may cause a burning sensation or extreme itching.

Spider veins affect both sexes and normally appear due to pregnancy, weight fluctuation or ageing. They are formed when superficial veins near the skin’s surface leak tiny amounts of blood. While they occur mostly on the legs, they can also appear on the face, and affect around 50 per cent of people aged over 50.

As a result, increasing numbers of people are turning to laser vein removal to combat the issue.

The procedure

With varicose veins, endovenous (inside the vein) laser energy is used to heat the vein in order to destroy it, while ‘simple’ laser treatment is used for spider veins.

Endovenous laser treatment takes place under local anaesthetic. The cosmetic surgeon passes a laser fibre through a catheter into the varicose vein which has been marked before surgery, using an ultrasound scan. Very strong bursts of laser light are sent inside the vein to produce intense heat that damages it and causes it to close.

Simple treatment is performed on the outside of the patient’s skin, with an intense beam of light directed at the spider vein and destroying it through the skin. This is sometimes a second step, after a larger varicose vein has been subject to the endovenous laser treatment.

Examples of negligence

The full recovery period after treatment is around a month, although patients are able to walk immediately after the procedure.

If you feel unsatisfied with your treatment, however, there are some indicators that you may have suffered negligence. They include:

  • Vein damage
  • Inappropriate scars
  • Skin burns
