The Mommy Makeover Boom: How Postpartum Cosmetic Surgery Demand Has Changed in 5 Years

For many women, pregnancy and childbirth bring lasting physical changes. The abdominal muscles can separate, skin may become loose, breasts can lose volume following pregnancy or breast feeding, and changes to body shape do not always respond to diet, exercise or weight loss.
Increasingly, women are discussing cosmetic surgery as a way of addressing these post pregnancy changes. Our analysis of online conversations suggests interest in the so-called mommy makeover has grown considerably over the past five years.
Cosmetic Surgery Solicitors analysed 2,107 Reddit posts published between January 2020 and May 2025 across 482 subreddits. We found that discussions about mummy makeover surgery increased from just 148 posts in 2020 to 630 in 2024 – a rise of 326%.
But behind the growing popularity are important questions about why women are considering surgery, the increasing number of procedures being combined and whether patients fully understand the risks involved.
What is a mommy makeover?
The term ‘mommy makeover’ does not refer to one specific cosmetic procedure. Instead, it is usually used to describe a combination of cosmetic surgery procedures intended to address a variety of physical changes following pregnancy and childbirth.
A mummy makeover procedure may include:
- A tummy tuck to remove excess skin and tighten the abdominal area
- Liposuction to remove stubborn areas of fat
- Breast augmentation using breast implants
- A breast lift or breast uplift to address breast sagging
- Breast reduction where appropriate
Some women may choose breast enlargement because their breasts lose volume following pregnancy or breastfeeding, while others may require a breast uplift because the position of the breasts or breast tissue has changed.
A tummy tuck procedure may also address separated abdominal muscles, known as diastasis recti, alongside removing loose skin or saggy skin.
Because every woman's post pregnancy body is different, there is no standard combination of procedures that makes up a mummy makeover.
Interest in mummy makeovers has more than quadrupled
Our analysis found a significant increase in online discussion of postpartum cosmetic surgery.
Reddit posts mentioning mummy makeovers rose from 148 in 2020 to 630 in 2024, representing a 326% increase.
The increase may reflect several changes in the way cosmetic surgery after pregnancy is discussed. Social media has made recovery diaries, before-and-after photographs and surgeon recommendations easier to access, while conversations about restoring a "pre baby body" or feeling like your pre pregnancy self have become increasingly visible.

More women are discussing several procedures at once
One of the clearest changes in the data concerns how many procedures women are considering. Mentions of liposuction, BBLs or breast surgery alongside tummy tuck discussions increased from 22.3% of posts in 2020 to 43.6% in 2025. This matters because a mummy makeover can make several significant surgical procedures sound like one treatment.
Combining a tummy tuck, breast augmentation and liposuction, for example, means several parts of the body are being operated on during the same surgical period.
While combined procedures can sometimes mean one period of recovery rather than several separate operations, they can also involve longer surgery under general anaesthetic, greater blood loss and a more demanding recovery.
The risks vary depending on the procedures involved, the patient's health and weight, the length of surgery and other individual factors.
Are mummy makeovers risky?
Every operation carries risk, and potential complications of mummy makeover surgery can include infection, bleeding, blood clot formation, wound-healing problems and complications associated with general anaesthetic.
Individual procedures also have their own general risks.
Breast augmentation, for example, carries risks associated with breast implants, while a tummy tuck involves significant abdominal surgery and may include tightening the abdominal muscles.
Combining operations does not automatically make a mummy makeover unsafe. However, patients should be assessed individually to determine whether undergoing several procedures together is appropriate.
A qualified surgeon should explain the risks associated with each procedure and any additional considerations created by combining them.
Women are researching surgeons more carefully
There is evidence that prospective patients are becoming more involved in researching their options.
Posts discussing research or asking for surgeon recommendations increased from 20.9% in 2020 to 29.6% in 2025.
This is particularly important for a mummy makeover because patients may be considering several procedures requiring different surgical skills.
Before proceeding, patients should check their surgeon's qualifications, professional registration and experience performing the specific procedures being considered. They should also understand where their surgery will take place, what follow up appointments are provided and who will be responsible for their care if complications occur.
Women should also discuss whether they are fully recovered postpartum. The appropriate time frame after giving birth will vary depending on individual circumstances, including recovery from pregnancy or a C section, weight changes and whether the patient has finished breastfeeding so it's advisable to be within a stone of your ideal weight if looking to undertake surgery.
Future pregnancy should also be considered, as becoming pregnant again can affect the final results of procedures such as a tummy tuck or breast lift.
The overseas mommy makeover is becoming more visible
Cost is another major theme within the data. Overseas destinations appeared in 8.6% of all posts, with discussions mentioning countries and locations including Turkey, Mexico, Tijuana, Colombia and the Dominican Republic.
Overseas mentions increased from around 9 or 10 posts per year in 2020-21 to 55 posts in 2024, representing a more than fivefold rise.
Travelling abroad can make procedures such as a tummy tuck, liposuction or breast augmentation considerably cheaper. Some clinics also market packages combining surgery, hospital treatment, accommodation and transfers, which can make treatment appear more accessible.
However, the lower cost can come with additional risks. Other countries may not follow the same regulatory standards, inspection requirements or professional oversight that apply to cosmetic surgery providers in the UK. This can make it harder for patients to judge whether a surgeon, clinic or hospital is operating to an equivalent standard before travelling.
There may also be less opportunity for detailed consultation before surgery, limited follow-up care after returning home and greater difficulty obtaining corrective treatment if complications develop. Pursuing legal action can also be more complex when treatment takes place overseas because different laws and regulatory systems may apply.
For these reasons, price should not be considered separately from safety, surgeon qualifications, regulation and aftercare.
What are the risks of having a mummy makeover abroad?
Cosmetic surgery abroad is not automatically unsafe, and the quality of treatment varies between surgeons, hospitals and countries.
However, travelling for surgery can introduce additional considerations. Patients may have less opportunity to meet their surgeon beforehand, and travelling home soon after major surgery can make the recovery process more difficult.
In the UK, patients can research a potential surgeon through the General Medical Council (GMC)General Medical Council (GMC) register, which shows whether a doctor is registered to practise and provides information about their professional status. GMC-registered doctors are expected to meet recognised professional standards, giving patients an additional way to check who will be carrying out their treatment before committing to surgery. Equivalent regulatory checks may be harder to make when travelling abroad, particularly where different registration systems and standards apply.
After returning to the UK, patients may also find it harder to attend follow up appointments or obtain treatment directly from their original surgeon if infection, wound problems or other complications develop.
Legal options can also become considerably more complicated when negligent surgery takes place overseas because different laws, regulatory systems and limitation periods may apply.
Our Reddit dataset included first-hand accounts of serious complications following surgery abroad, including a reported near-fatal infection. These are individual social media accounts rather than independently verified medical cases, but they demonstrate why understanding surgeon credentials, regulation and aftercare arrangements before travelling is important.
Is financing cosmetic surgery becoming more normal?
Financial discussions have also increased in recent years. Posts mentioning loans, payment plans or "saving up" rose from 2% in 2020 to 5.9% in 2023.
The cost of a mummy makeover can vary significantly depending on the number and complexity of procedures involved. As cosmetic surgery is generally elective, patients will usually need to fund post pregnancy procedures privately rather than through the NHS.
For some women, lower overseas prices or finance arrangements can therefore make surgery appear more achievable.
But the cost of surgery itself is only one consideration. If something goes wrong, additional expenses can include corrective treatment, further hospital care, time away from work, travel, childcare and further revision surgery.
Why do women choose mommy makeovers?
The emotional reasons behind mummy makeover surgery are also clear within the data. Around 10% of posts mentioned a partner, and these discussions generated particularly high levels of engagement. One Reddit post asking whether the author was wrong for wanting a mommy makeover received 2,919 upvotes and 900 comments.
Recurring conversations involved confidence, self esteem, relationships and women wanting to feel like their pre pregnancy self following childbirth.
Pregnancy, breast feeding and breastfeeding can change the breasts, skin, tummy and overall body in ways that diet and exercise cannot always reverse. For many women, considering surgery is therefore tied to identity and confidence rather than simply wanting to meet a particular beauty standard.
However, the decision should belong to the patient. Pressure from partners, social media or expectations about quickly returning to a pre pregnancy body should not replace careful consideration of the benefits and risks.
Complication stories aren't stopping interest from growing
Only around 5% of the posts analysed described genuine complications, yet these conversations received disproportionate attention.
Despite this, overall discussion of mummy makeovers continued to grow. This suggests an important difference between being aware that mommy makeover complications exist and understanding the risks that apply to an individual patient.
Reading someone else's experience online cannot replace a proper consultation. Before surgery, patients should receive clear information about potential complications, realistic outcomes and reasonable alternatives based on their own health and proposed procedures.
When can a mummy makeover gone wrong amount to negligence?
Experiencing a complication does not automatically mean cosmetic surgery was negligent. Infection, bleeding and other complications can occur even where appropriate care has been provided.
Whether a botched mommy makeover claim can be made depends instead on whether the surgeon fulfilled their duty of care before, during and after surgery.
- Before surgery, the surgeon should assess whether the patient is suitable for the proposed procedures, explain material risks and realistic outcomes, discuss reasonable alternatives and obtain informed consent.
- During surgery, they should perform the agreed procedures to the expected professional standard, using appropriate techniques and maintaining suitable hygiene.
- After surgery, the surgeon should monitor recovery, provide appropriate aftercare and respond properly if signs of infection, tissue damage, problems with breast implants or other complications develop.
If these responsibilities are not met and the patient suffers avoidable harm as a direct result, there may be grounds for a cosmetic surgery negligence claim.
Five years of data point to greater consideration, not necessarily greater understanding
The mummy makeover has become substantially more visible online over the last five years. Conversations are increasingly discussing multiple procedures, overseas treatment, financing and the emotional impact of post pregnancy body changes.
Greater visibility, however, should come with greater scrutiny. A mummy makeover is not one simple treatment. It may combine a tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction or liposuction, each carrying its own risks and recovery requirements.
Women considering surgery should therefore have enough time and information to make an informed decision based on their own circumstances rather than trends, package prices or pressure to return to a pre-baby body.
