Surgery Process Guide to External Rhinoplasty

“Rhinoplasty is among the most difficult of all cosmetic surgeries – poor surgical technique can lead to permanent deformity, so choose your surgeon carefully.” – Richard E. Davis, MD, FACS

The open approach to rhinoplasty involves incisions being made across the section of skin connecting the two nostrils (the columella), so the skin can be lifted, allowing greater access to reshape the nose.

You will be given a general anaesthetic before the surgery begins.

Your surgeon will make an incision across the thin strip of tissue between the two nostrils. The skin that covers the bones and cartilage becomes raised.

From this raised position the surgeon is then able to restructure the shape of the nose to its new, desired appearance.

Once the new nasal structure is completed, the skin is re-dressed over the tissue, before each incision is closed.

You will rouse from the surgery with gauze packing and / or a splint to help support the new structure as it starts to heal.

Surgical Risks

As this procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic, there are numerous associated risks. However, these are rare (typically, these risks will occur one case in every 10,000).

Complications can include:

  • Anaphylaxis (a harmful reaction to the anaesthetic)
  • Inherited reaction to the anaesthetic
  • In very rare cases, death (approx. 1 death for every 100,000 general anaesthetics given).

These serious complications are more likely to occur if:

  • You are undergoing emergency surgery
  • You have other illnesses
  • You are a smoker
  • You are overweight

Your surgeon should talk you through these risks before your operation.
